BSC Young Boys - Aston Villa live: Champions League - Football

Young Boys stun 10-man Villa to claim famous victory

Aston Villa fell to a shock 2-1 defeat to BSC Young Boys in the Champions League third qualifying round on Tuesday, with the Swiss side claiming a famous victory at the Wankdorf Stadium.

Villa, who were reduced to 10 men after Ezri Konsa was sent off in the 34th minute, took the lead through Ollie Watkins in the 31st minute.

However, Young Boys hit back to win the game with goals from Meschack Elia and Vincent Sierro in the second half.

The result leaves Villa with a mountain to climb in the second leg at Villa Park next week.

Villa's hopes of reaching the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2010 suffered a major blow as they were beaten by Young Boys in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play when Watkins slotted home from close range after being set up by Bertrand Traore.

However, Villa’s joy was short-lived as Young Boys equalised just four minutes later through Elia.

The hosts then took the lead for the first time in the game just after the hour mark when Sierro headed home from a corner.

Villa’s hopes of getting back into the game were dealt a further blow when Konsa was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 68th minute.

Young Boys held on to their lead to claim a famous victory and leave Villa with a tough task in the second leg.

The defeat was Villa’s first in the Champions League since they lost to Barcelona in the semi-finals in 1979.

Villa will need to win the second leg by at least two goals to progress to the play-off round.

The task will be even more difficult given that they will be without Konsa, who is suspended for the second leg.

Villa will also be without Leon Bailey, who was injured in the first half of the game.
