Merino Suffers Setback In Training

Gabi's tackle leaves Mikel Merino injured, delaying Arsenal debut

Merino suffers setback in training

Arsenal's summer signing Mikel Merino has suffered an injury setback in training, manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed. The £32m arrival from Real Sociedad will now miss the start of the season.

Arteta provides injury update

Speaking to the media, Arteta said: "It's a big blow for us. Mikel is a fantastic player and we were really looking forward to working with him. "Unfortunately, he picked up an injury in training yesterday. It's not a serious injury, but it will keep him out for a few weeks.

Merino's injury a concern for Arsenal

Merino's injury is a concern for Arsenal, who are already short of options in midfield. The Spaniard was expected to play a key role in Arteta's team this season.

Merino joins Partey on Arsenal injury list

Merino's injury also means that Arsenal will be without both of their senior central midfielders for the start of the season. Thomas Partey is also injured and is expected to miss the first few weeks of the campaign.

Arsenal's midfield options depleted

With Merino and Partey both out, Arsenal are now depleted of options in midfield. Granit Xhaka is the only senior central midfielder who is currently fit and available.

Arteta may have to dip into transfer market

Arteta may now have to dip into the transfer market to sign a new midfielder. The Spaniard has been linked with a move for Lyon's Houssem Aouar.
