Amazon Faces Antitrust Charges from European Commission
Abuse of Dominant Position Alleged
Massive Growth in Commissions and Fees
The European Commission has accused Amazon of abusing its dominant position in the online retail market. The charges allege that Amazon has engaged in anti-competitive practices, including giving preferential treatment to its own products and services, restricting access to its platform for third-party sellers, and using its data to gain an unfair advantage.
The Commission's investigation has also found that Amazon has been charging excessive fees to third-party sellers, resulting in a significant increase in commissions and fees paid by sellers. In the nine months to September 30, Amazon recorded 96 billion in commissions and fees paid by sellers, a jump of 21% compared to the same period last year.
The charges against Amazon are a significant development in the ongoing antitrust scrutiny of large tech companies. The Commission's findings could lead to fines and other sanctions against Amazon, as well as changes to its business practices.
