Michael Donovan gained notoriety in 2008 when Matthews was found alive in his Batley Carr flat, 24 days after her disappearance. Following his collapse at a mental health facility in West Yorkshire on Tuesday, Donovan passed away, according to the PA news agency.
Donovan was imprisoned alongside Karen Matthews, who received a sentence of eight years for her involvement in the plot. Donovan's death serves as a reminder of the horrifying case that gripped the nation.
